Chapter 12

Data Handling

Finding the mean, mode and median of a set of data — with an interactive exercise.

We summarise data using the mean, mode and median.

Mean = total ÷ number of values. Mode = the most frequent value. Median = the middle value when the data is ordered. For 2, 4, 6: mean $= 4$ and median $= 4$.

Remember

  • Mean = add up ÷ how many · Mode = most common · Median = middle.
  • Order the data before finding the median.
