Chapter 7

Linear Inequalities

Understanding inequality symbols and solving simple linear inequalities — with an interactive exercise.

An inequality compares values with $\lt$ (less than), $\gt$ (greater than), $\le$ (at most) or $\ge$ (at least).

Solve it like an equation: $x + 2 \gt 5 \;\Rightarrow\; x \gt 3$. The phrase "at least 3" means $x \ge 3$.

Remember

  • $\lt$ less than · $\gt$ greater than · $\le$ at most · $\ge$ at least.
  • Solve inequalities the same way as equations.
