Chapter 3

Coordination and Response

How the body detects stimuli and responds through the nervous system and sense organs — with an interactive exercise.

Living things respond to changes around them. A change that causes a response is a stimulus.

In humans, the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) and the sense organs detect stimuli and coordinate a response. A very fast, automatic response is a reflex, such as pulling your hand away from something hot.

Remember

  • Stimulus → response.
  • The nervous system and sense organs coordinate the body.
