Homeostasis in Living Things

What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the way a living thing keeps the conditions inside its body steady and balanced. Even when the weather outside changes, the body tries to keep the inside almost the same. This steady state helps cells and organs work well.

Homeostasis keeps internal conditions such as body temperature, water content and blood sugar within a safe, steady range.

Examples in the human body

  • Body temperature — stays around 37 °C. When we are hot, we sweat to cool down. When we are cold, we shiver to make heat.
  • Water content — the body removes extra water as urine and keeps water when we are thirsty.
  • Blood sugar — the body controls the amount of glucose in the blood so cells always have enough energy.

Why homeostasis matters

Cells are like tiny factories that only work well in the right conditions. If the body gets too hot, too cold or too dry, the cells cannot work properly and the person may fall sick. Homeostasis protects the body by keeping everything balanced.

Example

After running in the hot sun, you sweat and your face turns red. Sweating removes heat, and the extra blood near the skin releases heat. Both help cool you back to about 37 °C.
