Chapter 5

Matter

Matter, its particle nature, the three states, and density — with an interactive exercise.

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume). All matter is made of tiny particles.

Matter exists as solid, liquid or gas, and can change state by heating or cooling. Density tells how much mass is packed into a volume:

Formula

$\text{Density} = \frac{\text{Mass}}{\text{Volume}}$

Remember

  • Matter has mass and volume; it is made of particles.
  • Density = mass ÷ volume.
