Chapter 6

Periodic Table

How the elements are arranged in the Periodic Table into groups and periods, metals and non-metals — with an interactive exercise.

The Periodic Table arranges all the elements in order of their atomic number.

Columns are called groups and rows are called periods. Metals are on the left and centre; non-metals are on the right. Each element has a symbol, e.g. H (hydrogen), O (oxygen), C (carbon).

Remember

  • Columns = groups · Rows = periods.
  • Metals on the left, non-metals on the right.
