Chapter 4

Reproduction

How living things reproduce — sexual and asexual reproduction and fertilisation — with an interactive exercise.

Reproduction makes new living things so that a species continues.

In sexual reproduction (humans and many animals), a male sperm joins a female egg in fertilisation, forming a new cell that grows into a baby. Some simple organisms use asexual reproduction — for example bacteria split in two, and yeast reproduces by budding.

Remember

  • Fertilisation = sperm + egg join together.
  • Sexual reproduction needs two parents; asexual reproduction needs one.
