What is science?
Science is an organised way of studying the natural world by observing, asking questions and testing ideas. It is not just something that happens in a laboratory. Science is all around you every day. When you boil water, ride a bicycle, or watch clouds turn into rain, science is at work.
Every field of science helps us understand something different. Biology is the study of living things such as plants, animals and the human body. Physics studies forces, energy, light and motion. Chemistry studies substances and how they change. These fields work together to explain how the world behaves.
Science in daily life
Science makes modern life possible. Doctors use science to treat illness, farmers use it to grow more food, and engineers use it to build safe bridges and phones. Even simple choices, like keeping food in the fridge so bacteria grow more slowly, are based on scientific ideas.
- At home: cooking, cleaning and refrigeration all use science.
- In transport: cars, buses and aeroplanes use energy and forces.
- In communication: phones and the internet send signals using physics.
Example / Example
When you dry wet clothes in the sun, heat energy turns the water into water vapour. This everyday event is an example of evaporation, a scientific process.
Careers in science
Studying science opens the door to many careers, such as doctor, nurse, engineer, scientist and pharmacist. Learning science also helps you think clearly, ask good questions and make wise decisions in daily life.
Remember
- Science is a way of understanding the natural world.
- The main fields are biology, physics and chemistry.
- Science is used in the home, in transport and in communication.
