Patterns and Sequences

Recognising number patterns and continuing sequences, including arithmetic sequences — with an interactive exercise.

A sequence is a list of numbers that follow a rule; each number is a term.

In an arithmetic sequence we add the same amount each time — the common difference. For 3, 6, 9, 12, … the common difference is 3 and the next term is 15. In 2, 4, 8, 16, … each term is multiplied by 2.

Remember

  • Find the rule from term to term, then continue it.
  • Common difference = the constant amount added each time.
