Chapter 2

Ecosystem

Living and non-living parts of an ecosystem and how energy flows through it — with an interactive exercise.

An ecosystem is a community of living things together with their non-living surroundings.

Biotic components are living (plants, animals); abiotic components are non-living (water, air, light, soil). Energy flows through a food chain from producers to consumers.

Remember

  • Biotic = living · Abiotic = non-living.
  • Energy flows: producer → consumer → consumer.
