Chapter 9

Heat

The three ways heat travels — conduction, convection and radiation — with an interactive exercise.

Heat travels from hot to cold in three ways.

  • Conduction — through solids, especially metals.
  • Convection — through liquids and gases as they move.
  • Radiation — through empty space, like heat from the Sun.

Remember

  • Conduction (solids) · Convection (fluids) · Radiation (no medium needed).
  • The Sun's heat reaches us by radiation.
