Form 2 · Chapter 3

Importance of a Balanced Diet

Why eating the right amount of each food class keeps you healthy and active.

What is a balanced diet?

A balanced diet means eating food from all seven classes in the correct amounts. No single food gives us everything, so we must combine different foods. A balanced diet supplies enough energy and the right nutrients for growth, repair and good health.

Why it matters

The body needs different amounts of each nutrient. Eating too little or too much of any class leads to health problems.

  • Too little protein slows growth and healing.
  • Too little vitamin C can cause bleeding gums (scurvy).
  • Too little iron causes anaemia (tiredness, pale skin).
  • Too much fat and sugar can lead to obesity and heart disease.

Key idea

A balanced diet = the right classes of food + the right amounts, matched to a person's needs.

Factors that change our needs

The amount of food a person needs depends on several factors:

AgeTeenagers need more energy and protein for growth.
GenderMales often need slightly more energy than females.
ActivityAn athlete needs more energy than someone who sits all day.
HealthA sick person may need more protein and vitamins to recover.

Example

A 14-year-old football player needs more carbohydrate and protein than an elderly person who rests most of the day, because the player uses much more energy and is still growing.

Eating well every day, drinking enough water and avoiding too much sugary or oily food are simple ways to keep a balanced diet.
