Chapter 13

Meteoroids, Asteroids and Comets

The smaller bodies of the Solar System — meteoroids, asteroids and comets — with an interactive exercise.

Besides planets, smaller bodies orbit the Sun.

A meteoroid is a small rock in space; when it burns up in our atmosphere it is a meteor ("shooting star"); if it lands, it is a meteorite. Asteroids are rocky bodies, mostly in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are made of ice and dust and grow a bright tail near the Sun.

Remember

  • Meteoroid (space) → meteor (burning) → meteorite (landed).
  • Comets have tails; asteroids are rocky.
