Chapter 10

Sound Waves

Sound as a wave made by vibrations, how it travels, echoes, pitch and loudness — with an interactive exercise.

Sound is a wave made by vibrations. It needs a material (solid, liquid or gas) to travel through — it cannot travel in a vacuum.

Sound reflects off hard surfaces, producing an echo. A faster vibration gives a higher pitch; a bigger vibration gives a louder sound.

Remember

  • Sound needs a medium; no sound in a vacuum.
  • Echo = reflected sound. Pitch depends on how fast it vibrates.
