Chapter 5

Water and Solution

Solutes, solvents and solutions, and how substances dissolve in water — with an interactive exercise.

A solution forms when a solute dissolves in a solvent. For salty water, salt is the solute and water is the solvent.

Water is a very common solvent. Solubility is how much solute can dissolve; warming water usually lets more solid solute dissolve. Clean, safe water is essential for life.

Remember

  • Solution = solute + solvent.
  • Water is the "universal solvent"; heating often increases solubility.
