States that were never alone
The kingdoms of Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis did not live in isolation. They built relations with other Malay states and neighbours through trade, royal marriages, protection and tribute. These ties helped them stay safe, prosper and share a common Malay culture.
Political and protective ties
Negeri Sembilan long looked to Johor for support and had close cultural links with Melaka, from where its Minangkabau community had settled. Perlis stayed closely tied to Kedah, its parent state. To keep the peace with a powerful neighbour, Kedah, Kelantan and Perlis sent the bunga emas (golden flower tribute) to Siam.
