Electricity and Magnetism

Ohm's Law, electromagnetic induction, generators and motors — with an interactive exercise.

Electricity and magnetism are closely linked. In a circuit, voltage, current and resistance are related by Ohm's Law.

Ohm's Law

$V = I \times R$ Voltage (V) = Current (I) × Resistance (R)

A moving magnet near a coil produces a current — electromagnetic induction — which is how a generator works. A motor does the reverse: current makes movement.

Remember

  • $V = IR$.
  • Generator: movement → electricity · Motor: electricity → movement.
