Chapter 9

Space Weather

Conditions in space caused by the Sun's activity, and their effects on Earth — with an interactive exercise.

Space weather describes conditions in space caused by activity on the Sun.

The Sun sends out a stream of particles called the solar wind, and can release bursts of energy (solar flares). These can create beautiful auroras near the poles, but strong events can disturb satellites, radio signals and power grids.

Remember

  • Space weather comes from the Sun's activity.
  • It can cause auroras and disrupt satellites and communications.
