Chapter 1

Stimuli and Responses

How living things detect and respond to stimuli, including reflexes and plant tropisms — with an interactive exercise.

Living things detect and react to stimuli. In humans this is coordinated by the nervous system and by chemical messengers called hormones.

A very fast, automatic response is a reflex. Plants respond too, by tropism — growing towards light (phototropism) or with gravity (geotropism).

Remember

  • Stimulus → response, coordinated by nerves and hormones.
  • Phototropism = growth towards light.
