Transport System in Organisms

Why big organisms need transport systems, and how xylem, phloem and the human circulatory system move substances.

Why living things need transport

Every cell needs food and oxygen and must remove wastes. In very small or single-celled organisms this happens by diffusion alone, because no cell is far from the surface. But large multicellular organisms are too big for diffusion to reach every cell in time, so they need special transport systems to move substances quickly over long distances.

Small organism → diffusion is enough. Large organism → diffusion is too slow, so a transport system is needed.

Transport in plants

Plants have two transport tissues that run from roots to leaves.

  • Xylem carries water and dissolved minerals upward from the roots to the leaves. Xylem is made of dead, hollow cells joined into long tubes.
  • Phloem carries dissolved food, mainly sucrose, from the leaves to other parts. This movement is called translocation.

Water enters the plant through root hair cells, which have a large surface area for absorption. Water is pulled up the xylem as it evaporates from the leaves, a process called transpiration.

Example

Sugar made in a leaf during the day is carried by the phloem to a growing root tip, where it is used for energy and growth.

Transport in humans

Humans use the blood circulatory system: the heart pumps blood through arteries, capillaries and veins to carry oxygen, food, wastes and heat around the body.
