Chapter 6

Business Documents

Invoices, credit notes, statements and receipts as the source of accounting entries — with an interactive exercise.

Business documents are the source of the entries in the accounting records.

An invoice is issued for a credit sale/purchase; a credit note for goods returned; a debit note requests a reduction; a statement of account summarises what a customer owes; a receipt proves cash received; and a cheque is used for payment.

Remember

  • Invoice = credit transaction; receipt = cash received.
  • Credit note = goods returned; statement summarises what is owed.
