Chapter 18

Accounts of Clubs and Societies

Receipts and payments, income and expenditure accounts for non-profit organisations — with an interactive exercise.

Accounts of clubs and societies are for non-profit-making organisations that serve their members.

They prepare a receipts and payments account (a summary of cash), an income and expenditure account (like an income statement), and a statement of financial position. The surplus of income over expenditure is called a surplus (not profit); the shortfall is a deficit. Main income is usually subscriptions.

Remember

  • Surplus (not profit) = income over expenditure; deficit = the opposite.
  • Subscriptions are the main source of income.
