Double entry book-keeping – Part B extends double entry to returns, discounts and the division of the ledger.
Trade discount is a reduction off the list price (never recorded in the ledger); cash discount is for prompt payment (recorded). The ledger is divided into the sales ledger (receivables), purchases ledger (payables) and general (nominal) ledger.
Remember
- Trade discount is not recorded; cash discount is recorded.
- Ledger divisions: sales ledger, purchases ledger, general ledger.
