Chapter 5

Petty Cash Books

Recording small cash payments and the imprest system — with an interactive exercise.

Petty cash books record small, everyday cash payments (postage, travel, refreshments) so the main cash book is not cluttered.

Most businesses use the imprest system: the petty cashier starts with a fixed float (imprest amount), and at the end of the period is reimbursed exactly the amount spent, restoring the float. If the float is RM200 and RM150 is spent, the reimbursement is RM150.

Remember

  • Imprest system: reimbursement = amount spent, restoring the float.
  • Petty cash is for small routine payments.
