Chapter 6

Logarithmic and Exponential Functions

Logarithms, exponentials and the log laws — with an interactive exercise.

Logarithmic and Exponential Functions are inverses of each other.

$\log_a b = c$ means $a^c = b$. So $\log_2 8 = 3$ because $2^3=8$, and $\log_{10}100=2$. Log laws: $\log(xy)=\log x+\log y$. The number $e$ gives the natural log $\ln$.

Remember

  • $\log_a b = c \Leftrightarrow a^c=b$.
  • $\log_{10}1 = 0$ and $\log_a a = 1$.
