Acids, bases and alkalis
An acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions, H+, when dissolved in water. A base is a substance that neutralises an acid; a base that is soluble in water is called an alkali and produces hydroxide ions, OH−. Common acids are hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acid; common alkalis are sodium hydroxide and aqueous ammonia.
Key idea
The pH scale runs from 0 to 14. pH < 7 is acidic, pH = 7 is neutral, pH > 7 is alkaline. More H+ means a lower pH.
Indicators
- Litmus: red in acid, blue in alkali.
- Universal indicator: shows a range of colours — red for a strong acid, green at pH 7, purple for a strong alkali.
- Phenolphthalein: colourless in acid, pink in alkali.
Reactions of acids
Acids react in typical ways, always forming a salt:
- acid + metal → salt + hydrogen
- acid + base (or alkali) → salt + water (neutralisation)
- acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
Worked example
Hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O. The essential neutralisation is H+ + OH− → H2O, forming the salt sodium chloride and water.
Remember
- Acids give H+; alkalis give OH−.
- A strong acid is fully ionised in water; a weak acid is only partly ionised.
- Neutralisation always makes a salt and water.
