Electrochemistry uses electricity to break down compounds — electrolysis.
The compound must be molten or dissolved so its ions can move. Positive ions move to the negative electrode (cathode); negative ions move to the positive electrode (anode).
Remember
- Cathode = negative; anode = positive.
- Positive ions go to the cathode.
