Chapter 9

Metals

The reactivity series, displacement, alloys and corrosion — with an interactive exercise.

Metals can be ordered by how reactive they are — the reactivity series.

A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one. Reactive metals (like sodium) react quickly with water and acid; gold is very unreactive. A mixture of metals is an alloy (e.g. steel), often stronger than the pure metal.

Remember

  • More reactive metals displace less reactive ones.
  • An alloy is a mixture of metals.
