Chapter 2

Algebra and Graphs

Simplifying, factorising, solving equations, and straight-line graphs — with an interactive exercise.

Algebra and Graphs covers simplifying and factorising expressions, solving linear and quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, and drawing graphs.

To solve a linear equation, keep it balanced: $2x + 3 = 11 \Rightarrow 2x = 8 \Rightarrow x = 4$. A straight-line graph is $y = mx + c$, where $m$ is the gradient and $c$ the $y$-intercept.

Remember

  • Do the same to both sides to solve an equation.
  • $y = mx + c$: $m$ = gradient, $c$ = y-intercept.
