Homeostasis

How the body keeps its internal conditions steady while the outside world changes.

What Is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment in the body despite changes in the external surroundings. The internal environment is mainly the tissue fluid and blood plasma that bathe our cells. Cells only work well when this environment stays within narrow limits, so the body constantly regulates factors such as body temperature, blood glucose concentration, water and solute balance (osmoregulation), blood pH and carbon dioxide level.

Why It Matters

Many life processes depend on stable conditions. Enzymes that control metabolism only reach their fastest, safest rate near an optimum temperature (about 37 °C in humans) and a suitable pH; large swings would slow reactions or denature the enzymes. Steady glucose keeps a reliable fuel supply to the brain, and controlled water balance stops cells from bursting or shrinking by osmosis.

Key idea

Receptor detects a change → control centre (often the brain) processes the information → effector (muscle or gland) acts to reverse the change. This is negative feedback.

Negative Feedback

Homeostasis works mostly by negative feedback: when a value moves away from its normal level (the set point), the response pushes it back toward normal. The correction then switches off once the normal level is restored, preventing overshoot. For example, if blood glucose rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin, which lowers glucose; when glucose returns to normal, insulin release falls.

Example

On a hot day, temperature receptors in the skin and hypothalamus detect the rise. The body responds by sweating and by widening skin blood vessels (vasodilation) so more heat is lost. Once body temperature falls back to about 37 °C, these responses ease off.

Remember

Homeostasis does not keep values perfectly constant. It keeps them fluctuating within a narrow, safe range around a set point.
