Leaf Structure

The internal layers of a leaf and how each part is suited to its job.

The leaf is the plant organ built mainly for photosynthesis, but it also carries out gaseous exchange and transpiration. A leaf is broad and flat, giving a large surface area, and is thin so gases and light reach the inner cells easily. Cutting across a leaf reveals several tissue layers, each adapted to its role.

From top to bottom

  • Cuticle — a thin waxy layer over the epidermis that reduces water loss and is transparent to let light through.
  • Upper epidermis — a single protective layer of cells with no chloroplasts; it does not block light.
  • Palisade mesophyll — column-shaped cells packed just below the upper epidermis. They contain the most chloroplasts and carry out most of the photosynthesis.
  • Spongy mesophyll — loosely packed rounded cells with air spaces between them. The air spaces allow gases to diffuse; these cells also photosynthesise.
  • Lower epidermis — contains many stomata (pores). Each stoma is bordered by two guard cells that open and close it.

Key idea

Palisade mesophyll sits near the top with the most chloroplasts for photosynthesis; spongy mesophyll below has air spaces for gaseous exchange.

Veins (vascular bundles)

Running through the mesophyll are the veins, which contain xylem and phloem. Xylem delivers water and mineral salts to the leaf cells; phloem carries away the sugar made in photosynthesis. Veins also support and hold the leaf flat.

Guard cells and stomata

Guard cells are the only epidermal cells with chloroplasts. When they swell with water they become turgid and curve apart, opening the stoma; when they lose water they close it. This controls the exchange of carbon dioxide, oxygen and water vapour.

Example

On a bright, well-watered morning the guard cells are turgid, the stomata open, carbon dioxide diffuses in for photosynthesis and water vapour escapes as transpiration. On a hot dry afternoon the guard cells may lose water and close the stomata to conserve water.

Remember

Most stomata are on the lower epidermis. This reduces water loss because the underside is cooler and less exposed to direct sun.
