Why safety rules exist
A biology laboratory is a place of learning, but it also holds hazards: sharp scalpels, hot Bunsen burners, glass apparatus, chemicals and microorganisms. Safety rules reduce the chance of accidents and make sure everyone can work calmly.
Basic rules to follow
- Never eat, drink or taste anything in the laboratory.
- Wear a lab coat and, when needed, goggles and gloves.
- Tie back long hair and do not run or play.
- Read the label before using any chemical.
- Report all spills, breakages and injuries to the teacher at once.
- Wash your hands after handling specimens or chemicals.
- Dispose of waste in the correct container, not the sink.
Hazard symbols and first aid
Containers carry hazard symbols that warn of danger, such as toxic, flammable and corrosive. Recognising them before you touch a chemical prevents harm. A laboratory also keeps a first-aid kit and knows where the fire extinguisher, eyewash and emergency exit are.

Working with living specimens
Biology is special because it often uses living material such as pond water, insects or plant samples. These must be treated with care and respect. Living specimens should be handled gently, returned to a suitable place or disposed of properly, and never taken home. Preserved specimens may be stored in chemicals that are harmful, so they are handled with gloves and kept away from the face.
Before starting any practical, a student should listen to all instructions, set out only the apparatus that is needed, and keep the bench tidy. A clear, uncluttered working area prevents knocks and spills.
