Factors Affecting the Rate of Reaction

How surface area, concentration, temperature, pressure and catalysts speed up or slow down reactions.

The main factors

Several conditions change how fast a reaction happens. Understanding each factor helps us control reactions in the laboratory and in industry.

  • Total surface area of a solid reactant — smaller pieces (powder) have a larger total surface area, so more particles are exposed and the rate increases. A lump reacts more slowly than the same mass of powder.
  • Concentration of a solution — a higher concentration packs more reactant particles into the same volume, giving more frequent collisions and a higher rate.
  • Pressure of a gas — increasing pressure squeezes gas particles closer together (like raising concentration), so the rate increases.
  • Temperature — heating gives particles more kinetic energy; they move faster, collide more often and, importantly, a larger fraction have energy above the activation energy. Rate rises sharply with temperature.
  • Catalyst — a substance that speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative path with lower activation energy. It is not used up and is chemically unchanged at the end.

Key idea

Surface area, concentration, pressure and temperature all raise the rate by increasing the frequency of effective collisions. A catalyst raises the rate by lowering the activation energy, so a bigger fraction of collisions are effective.

A comparison experiment

Zinc and dilute sulphuric acid give hydrogen gas: Zn(s) + H2SO4(aq) → ZnSO4(aq) + H2(g). Using the same mass of zinc powder instead of zinc lumps, or using more concentrated acid, or warming the mixture, all make the gas come off faster.

Worked example

The same mass of marble reacts with acid. As lumps it takes 100 s; as powder it takes 25 s. Since rate ∝ 1 ÷ time, the powder reaction is 100 ÷ 25 = 4 times faster because the powder has a much larger total surface area.

Remember

  • A catalyst is not consumed and does not change the amount of product formed.
  • Concentration and pressure have no effect if there are no gases or solutions involved.
  • Temperature usually has the strongest effect on rate.
