Four economic sectors
An economic activity is human effort to produce goods and services to meet needs. It is classified into four sectors according to the stage of processing.
Key idea
Primary = extract raw materials. Secondary = process them. Tertiary = services. Quaternary = information and research.
Primary and secondary sectors
- Primary — directly exploits natural resources: agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining.
- Secondary — processes raw materials into finished goods: manufacturing and construction, such as a factory turning rubber into tyres.
Tertiary and quaternary sectors
- Tertiary — provides services: trade, transport, education, banking and tourism.
- Quaternary — knowledge- and high-technology-based activities such as research, information technology (ICT) and biotechnology.
In Malaysia, the economy has grown from relying on the primary sector (rubber and tin) to the secondary sector (manufacturing) and now increasingly emphasises tertiary and quaternary sectors such as digital services and research. This diversification makes the national economy more resilient and competitive.
