Although each functional department has a different task, they cannot work alone. One department often needs information, products or resources from another. This relationship is called interaction between departments.
Examples of interdependence
- Marketing and Production — Marketing tells Production how much and what kind of product customers want; Production tells Marketing how much can be made and when.
- Production and Purchasing — Production needs raw materials; Purchasing buys them at the right time.

Effects of weak interaction
If interaction is weak, problems arise — for example, Marketing promises a product Production cannot make, or Finance is unaware of a funding need. This leads to waste, delays and lost customers.

Good interaction can be built in several ways. Meetings between department heads let information be shared and problems solved earlier. A shared information system ensures every department sees the same data, such as stock levels or order status. Clear shared goals help each department understand that it works for the company's success, not just its own department.
