The Procedure for Obtaining Financing for a Business

Obtaining external financing is not just asking for money; it follows an orderly procedure from planning to repayment.

To obtain financing, especially a bank loan, an entrepreneur must follow an orderly procedure. This procedure assures the lender that the funds will be used well and repaid.

Main steps

  • Identify the need — decide the amount required and its purpose.
  • Prepare a business plan — a document describing the business, sales projections and cash flow.
  • Choose an institution — compare interest rates and terms of various banks or agencies.
  • Submit the application — fill in the form and attach supporting documents such as financial statements and SSM registration.
  • Credit evaluation — the bank assesses the applicant's eligibility and ability to repay.
  • Provide collateral — assets are pledged as security if required.
  • Approval and agreement — sign the loan agreement.
  • Disbursement of funds — funds are released for use, followed by scheduled repayment.

Example

Mr Farid prepares a business plan for his bicycle shop, submits it to two banks, chooses the one offering lower interest, and pledges his shop's title as collateral before a RM50,000 loan is approved.

Key idea

Complete documents and a convincing business plan raise the chance of approval. Credit evaluation assesses the risk before the bank agrees to lend.

Responsibilities after obtaining financing

The procedure does not end when the funds are received. The business is responsible for repaying the instalments on the agreed schedule, usually covering both principal and interest. A good repayment record improves the business's credit reputation and eases future financing applications. In contrast, failure to pay can lead to the collateral being auctioned, penalties being imposed, and the business being blacklisted. An entrepreneur must therefore ensure the funds are used for their original purpose and keep orderly financial records. Disciplined management of financing is as important as the process of obtaining it.

Following the procedure correctly saves time, avoids rejection and builds a good relationship with the financial institution for future needs.
