A business is an activity of producing, supplying or selling goods and services to satisfy human needs. Every business is set up for a particular reason, and this reason is called the purpose of the business. Understanding these purposes matters because they form the basis of every decision a trader makes.
Economic purposes
For most businesses the leading purpose is to earn a profit. Profit is made when total sales exceed total costs. Profit allows a business to keep operating, to pay its workers and to expand. A business also aims to satisfy the needs and wants of consumers by supplying the goods and services that society requires.
Example
A burger stall buys ingredients costing RM4 per burger and sells each for RM7. The RM3 profit per burger is the economic purpose that drives the owner to continue the business.
Social purposes
A business also has responsibilities to society. Its social purposes include creating jobs for local people, contributing to national economic development through taxes paid to LHDN, and carrying out social responsibility such as donating and caring for the environment.
- Employment — reduces the unemployment rate.
- Tax contribution — helps fund public spending.
- Consumer welfare — offering safe, good-quality products.
Growth purposes
A business aims to grow over time, for example by adding branches, entering new markets or launching new products. Growth secures the long-term survival of the business and improves its competitiveness.
Needs versus wants
To satisfy consumers, a trader must tell the difference between needs and wants. Needs are the basics people must have, such as food, clothing and shelter, while wants are extra desires such as the latest smartphone or branded clothing. By understanding this difference, a trader can offer products the market truly wants, raise sales and keep customers loyal. A clear purpose also guides day-to-day decisions such as setting prices, choosing suppliers and planning promotions, so that every action is aligned with the goals of the business.
Remember
Profit is not the only purpose. Modern businesses balance profit with social responsibility and sustainable development.
