Forces in Equilibrium

An object is in equilibrium when the resultant force acting on it is zero, so it stays at rest or moves at constant velocity.

The condition for equilibrium

An object is in equilibrium when all the forces on it cancel out — the resultant force is zero. Such an object is either at rest (static equilibrium) or moving at constant velocity. This is a direct consequence of Newton's first law.

Working with three forces

When exactly three forces keep an object in equilibrium, drawing them head-to-tail produces a closed triangle. We can then use trigonometry or resolve into horizontal and vertical directions and set each sum to zero.

Worked example / 例题

A 5 kg lamp hangs from two ropes. If it is in equilibrium (g = 10 m s⁻²), what is the total upward force from the ropes?
Weight W = mg = 5 × 10 = 50 N downward.
For equilibrium the ropes must provide 50 N upward in total.

Worked example / 例题

A box is pulled right by 30 N and left by 30 N, while a 40 N force up balances a 40 N weight down. Is it in equilibrium?
ΣFx = 30 − 30 = 0; ΣFy = 40 − 40 = 0. Both sums are zero, so yes, it is in equilibrium.
