The pillars of the federation
Malaysia's federal system stays strong because several institutions and principles bind the states and the centre together. The most important is the Federal Constitution, the supreme law that every government must obey and that fixes the division of powers. No state or federal law may contradict it.
Institutions that unite the country
- Yang di-Pertuan Agong — the constitutional Head of State, a symbol of unity chosen from among the Malay Rulers for a five-year term.
- Conference of Rulers — brings the Rulers and Governors together to discuss national matters, elect the Agong and safeguard Malay rights and Islam.
- Parliament — the federal legislature (Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara) makes laws for the whole nation; the Dewan Negara gives every state a voice.
- An independent judiciary — interprets the Constitution and settles disputes between the federal and state governments.

Unifying principles
A single national citizenship means every Malaysian belongs to one nation rather than to a separate state. The national language, Bahasa Melayu, and national symbols create a shared identity. The Rukun Negara, proclaimed in 1970, sets out common national principles. Fair distribution of development and cooperation through national councils also strengthen the bond between the states and the centre.
