Political effects
The Emergency pushed the different communities to work together against a common enemy, which strengthened the case for a united, self-governing nation. The British became more willing to grant self-government and independence to a Malaya led by moderate, anti-communist leaders. Cooperation between UMNO, MCA and MIC in the Alliance grew stronger, and the drive towards Merdeka was speeded up.
Social effects
The biggest social change came from the Briggs Plan: around half a million rural people, mostly Chinese, were resettled into New Villages. These new settlements were given roads, water, electricity, schools and clinics, and many still exist today. Identity cards became a permanent part of life. Sadly, thousands of soldiers, police and civilians lost their lives.
Economic effects
Attacks on estates, mines and transport caused heavy losses and slowed production, and huge sums had to be spent on security. At the same time, high world prices for rubber and tin during the Korean War helped the government pay these costs. Development of infrastructure in the New Villages and rural areas was also stepped up. Even so, the conflict left a lasting mark, as many families were uprooted and the country came to see how closely security, the economy and national unity were tied together.
