What the idea proposed
The idea of Malaysia (Gagasan Malaysia) was a plan to unite five British-linked territories — the Federation of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo (Sabah) and Brunei — into one enlarged federation. It was publicly proposed by Tunku Abdul Rahman on 27 May 1961 in a speech to the Foreign Correspondents' Association of Southeast Asia in Singapore.
Aims of the idea
- Political — to speed up independence for Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah, which were still under British rule, through union with an already independent Malaya.
- Security — to curb the spread of communism, especially the fear that a self-governing Singapore might fall under communist influence.
- Economic — to create a larger common market and pool resources for faster development.
- Social — to balance the population so that no single community would dominate, keeping the new federation stable.

The result of the idea
Not all five territories joined. Brunei pulled out over questions of oil revenue and the precedence of its Sultan, and after the Brunei uprising of late 1962. Singapore joined but later separated in 1965. In the end Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963 from Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah. The idea marked a bold step towards uniting the region under one sovereign nation.
