After gaining independence in 1957, Malaysia chose to be an active member of the international community rather than a passive one. Its foreign policy rests on neutrality, respect for the sovereignty of other states, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. Malaysia strongly condemned the apartheid system of racial segregation in South Africa and supported its isolation until the policy was dismantled.
