Form 4 · Chapter 7

The Formation of Political Parties

How UMNO, MCA, MIC and other parties were founded, and how the UMNO-MCA-MIC Alliance became the vehicle for independence.

The birth of the main parties

Political parties gave the different communities an organised voice. UMNO (United Malays National Organisation) was founded on 11 May 1946 by Dato Onn Jaafar, growing out of Malay opposition to the Malayan Union. MCA (Malayan Chinese Association) was formed on 27 February 1949 under Tan Cheng Lock, and MIC (Malayan Indian Congress) was set up in 1946. Each party spoke for its own community while sharing the goal of a better future for Malaya.

Other parties

Not every party was community-based. Dato Onn left UMNO to form the multi-racial Independence of Malaya Party (IMP) in 1951, and later Parti Negara. The Pan-Malayan Islamic Party (PAS) was also founded in the early 1950s. These parties widened political choice but none matched the strength of the Alliance.

The Alliance

The key breakthrough was cooperation. In 1952, UMNO and MCA joined forces to contest the Kuala Lumpur municipal election and won convincingly. MIC joined in 1955, forming the three-party Alliance (Perikatan). By working together and sharing seats, the Alliance showed the British that the communities could govern jointly — the foundation for the 1955 election victory and independence. The rise of these parties marked a shift from scattered protest to organised, peaceful politics, giving the people a lawful channel through which to press their demands.

Key idea

UMNO (1946), MCA (1949) and MIC (1946) gave each community an organised voice; their cooperation as the Alliance (UMNO-MCA 1952, MIC 1955) became the vehicle that led Malaya to independence.

Remember

  • UMNO — 11 May 1946, Dato Onn Jaafar.
  • MCA — 27 Feb 1949, Tan Cheng Lock.
