Unity and integration
National unity means bringing together the different peoples of Malaysia so that they share a common identity, loyalty and sense of belonging. National integration is the closely related process of joining the country's different regions — especially the peninsula with Sabah and Sarawak — into one united nation. Both are essential for a peaceful and stable multi-racial country.
Malaysia's diversity of race, religion, language and culture is a strength, but it can also create division if not managed well. The 13 May 1969 tragedy showed how dangerous disunity could be, and afterwards the government made unity a top national priority.

Efforts to build unity
The government introduced many measures to strengthen unity and integration.
- Department of National Unity — set up to plan and coordinate unity programmes.
- Rukun Negara — shared national principles proclaimed in 1970.
- National Education Policy — a common school system and curriculum to bring young people together.
- Malay as the national language — a common language of communication under Article 152.
- National Cultural Policy and sport — used to create shared identity and friendship across communities.
Toward one nation
These policies work together so that citizens see themselves first as Malaysians. Integration with Sabah and Sarawak, through fair development and equal citizenship, helps make the federation whole. Unity is an ongoing effort that every generation must continue.
