Building the Stage for History
Independence had to be welcomed with dignity, so elaborate preparations were made in the weeks before 31 August 1957. The most visible symbol was the construction of Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, completed in August 1957 specifically to host the proclamation ceremony. A grand purpose-built venue signalled that a nation was being born.
Organising the Celebrations
A special committee was formed to plan the events, invitations and decorations. Foreign dignitaries and representatives were invited, and the text of the Proclamation of Independence was carefully prepared for the Tunku to read. Streets, government buildings and towns across the country were decorated to mark the occasion.
The Midnight Flag Ceremony
The transfer of power was marked at midnight on the night of 30–31 August 1957 at the Padang of the Selangor Club (today Dataran Merdeka). As the clock struck twelve, the Union Jack was lowered and the flag of the Federation of Malaya was raised in its place, to shouts of Merdeka. This solemn moment symbolised the end of British rule before the main ceremony held later that morning at Stadium Merdeka.
