What is data?
Data means small bits of information. For example, how many apples you have, or what colour your crayons are, is data. We can collect data in easy ways, like counting things or asking our friends.
Classify the data
To classify means to put things into groups that are the same. We can group by colour, by shape, or by kind. All the red things go together. All the blue things go together.
Arrange the data
To arrange means to put the groups in order. We can go from the most to the fewest, or from the fewest to the most. A table helps us keep the data neat.
Worked example
Nita has 3 apples, 2 bananas and 1 orange. First classify by fruit: apples = 3, bananas = 2, oranges = 1. Then arrange from most to fewest: apples (3), bananas (2), oranges (1).

- Collect = count or ask.
- Classify = make same groups.
