Chapter 1

Combining Numbers

Put groups together to find the total. Combining is adding!

Combining numbers

Combining means putting groups together. When we combine, we add and find the total (how many altogether).

Key idea

Group + group = total. Example: 2 + 3 = 5. The sign + means "add".

Count on to add

Start with the first number, then count on the second number.

Worked example

3 red balls and 3 blue balls. Combine: 3 + 3. Count on from 3: 4, 5, 6. So 3 + 3 = 6 balls.

Remember

  • Combine = add = put together.
  • The total is bigger than each group.
