Combining numbers
Combining means putting groups together. When we combine, we add and find the total (how many altogether).
Key idea
Group + group = total. Example: 2 + 3 = 5. The sign + means "add".
Count on to add
Start with the first number, then count on the second number.
Worked example
3 red balls and 3 blue balls. Combine: 3 + 3. Count on from 3: 4, 5, 6. So 3 + 3 = 6 balls.
Remember
- Combine = add = put together.
- The total is bigger than each group.
