Money word problems
Money stories use ringgit (RM) and sen. We add to find the total when we buy things, and take away to find the change when we pay.
Key idea
Buy more things → add (+) the prices.
Pay and get change → take away (−).
Four easy steps
- Read the story.
- Think: add or take away?
- Do the sum.
- Check the answer.
Worked example
A pencil costs RM2 and a book costs RM3. How much in all?
RM2 + RM3 = RM5.
You have RM10 and buy a toy for RM4. What is your change?
RM10 − RM4 = RM6.
Always write RM or sen next to your answer, so everyone knows it is money.
Remember
- "Total" or "in all" → add.
- "Change" or "left" → take away.
- Keep RM with RM and sen with sen.
