What is a pictograph?
A pictograph is a picture chart. It uses pictures or symbols to show how many things there are. In our simple pictographs, each picture stands for just 1 thing.
How to read a pictograph
To read a pictograph, we count the pictures in each row. Each row shows one group, like apples or bananas. The row with more pictures has more things. The row with fewer pictures has fewer things. We can also see which row has the most and which has the fewest. It is a fun and easy way to see numbers with our eyes.
Key idea
Each picture = 1 thing. Count the pictures to find the number.
Worked example
Apples: 3 apple pictures, so there are 3 apples. Bananas: 2 banana pictures, so there are 2 bananas. Apples have more. How many more? 3 − 2 = 1 more apple.
Remember
- Count each picture as 1.
- More pictures means more things.
