Chapter 7

Space

Recognising flat 2D shapes and solid 3D shapes, and counting their sides and corners — with an interactive exercise.

We recognise 2D shapes (flat) and 3D shapes (solid).

Flat (2D) shapes

A square has 4 equal sides and 4 corners; a triangle has 3 sides; a rectangle has 4 sides; a circle is round with no corners.

Solid (3D) shapes

Some solid shapes are the cube, sphere (ball), cylinder and cone.

Remember

  • Square & rectangle: 4 sides · Triangle: 3 sides · Circle: no corners.
  • 2D shapes are flat; 3D shapes are solid.
